HEALTH IV
Cancelled by the Cuban authorities
A Media21 journalist workshop
during Forum 2009
Havana,
Cuba, 16-20 November 2009
+Field
Visits in Cuba In collaboration with the Global Forum for Health Research, Geneva
Concept
The Global Forum’s 2009 annual
meeting will bring together
800 decision-makers in funding, research and policy, including key figures
ranging from Chen Zhu, Chinese Minister of Health, to
Jeffrey Sachs, Director of Earth
Institute at Columbia University (USA). One aim of this multi-disciplinary and interactive
meeting is to create a conducive environment for innovation (cost-effective
services, products, methods, management practices) to improve health and health
equity.
Media play a crucial role in bridging the gap between providers and users of
health facilities, as well as highlighting neglected issues and bold solutions.
The location of this event is particularly appealing: Cuba has achieved a
unique public health system and developed leading biotechnology units. The Forum also occurs at a
time of ongoing evolution in Washington-Havana relations.
This 23rd Media21 workshop – the 4th
dedicated to health – will be an exceptional opportunity for journalists, editors
and producers to share experience while improving their knowledge and contacts.
Apart from attending sessions of the Forum, journalists will take part in
specially-tailored panel discussions. They will be able to meet with high level
international players, notably key representatives from research institutions,
development agencies, private sector,
foundations, NGOs, ministries and media. Such encounters can provide interviews
and background insight for exploring
numerous story ideas, among them: national
health innovation systems, social entrepreneurship for health, product development
for neglected diseases, eHealth, knowledge translation platforms, donor-country
harmonization and coherence, innovative financing strategies, "innovation
indicators" for developing countries, the role of traditional medicine,
climate change adaptation and mitigation, changing business models in the
pharmaceutical industry, global health diplomacy, etc. Workshop Objectives

from all continents on the technological and social innovations in the health
sector and its translation to the public.
●
